Ever since childhood, Calvin Klein wanted to be a designer. As a boy, he taught himself to sketch and sew. He later attended New York City's High School of are and Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology. After graduation from FIT, he worked his way up through the design ranks in New York's Garment Center until it was the right time to launch his own label, when he and businessman Barry K. Schwartz, a childhood friend, formed a partnership and opened Calvin Klein, Inc.

Calvin Klein is the recipient of six awards for outstanding design from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (four for womenswear; two for menswear). He is also a three-time winner of the Coty Award and the youngest designer ever to receive that honor. FIT has recognized him with its President's Award, and he has received the President's Medal from the Art Directors' Club for outstanding creative achievement in advertising.

Calvin Klein has one daughter, Marci. He lives in New York City.
