Cleaning Jewelry
Tips and guide to keeping your jewelry clean and looking brand new. General
cleaning tips are: 1) Keep jewelry away from your makeup, hairspray, perfume,
etc. when possible, 2) avoid contact with perspiration, 3) store in a clean and
dry place, and 4) have jewelry periodically checked by a professional jeweler.
Diamonds
Mix one part ammonia to six parts water. Scrub with as soft brush and be careful
of scratching the metal. Have diamond jewelry checked yearly by a professional.
Gold
Keep away from chemicals such as cleaning fluids. Simply use warm water and
detergent free soap to clean. Dry your gold with a soft cloth.
Platinum
Soak in mild solution of warm water and soap. Use a soft bristled brush to scrub
off dirt. Use a soft cloth to dry and buff your platinum jewelry.
Sterling Silver
Use mild soap and water, dry with a soft cloth. Avoid tissues which contain
fibers that can cause scratching.
Pearls
Clean with mild, soapy water. Have pearl jewelry checked every year by a
professional jeweler.
Emeralds
Simply wipe with a soft cloth. Have emeralds professionally cleaned every 3 - 5
years.
Opals
Avoid wearing opal in cold and hot weather as opals are prone to cracking. Use
soft cloth and warm water to clean. Avoid using ammonia, cleaning solutions and
ultrasonic cleaning.
Rubies
Mix one part ammonia to six parts water. You can also use an ultrasonic cleaner.
Dry with a very soft cloth.
