The Fashion and Music of Ashanti
Urban credibility has been the hallmark of Ashanti’s success in the
world of music and fashion.
Named after a major ethnic group of Akans in Ghana, Africa, the hot
chocolate of R&B first made her presence felt in the U.S. music
industry via collaborations with Jennifer Lopez, Ja Rule and Fat Joe. With
Jennifer Lopez especially, Ashanti has been credited behind the Latin
actress-turned-singer’s smart transition from pop to R&B/hip hop.
Rumors have it that Ashanti served as discreet vocal coach to J.Lo by
recording all the latter’s hit songs first for study including the
seminal crossover smash, “I’m Real.” Her status as the industry’s best kept
secret could not be confined for long. Soon, the 21 year old became the first
vocalist signed up by Murder Inc. (known mostly for hardcore rap and
hip hop acts) that bankrolled her eponymous debut album.
The lead single, “Foolish,” gave people a taste of edgy hip hop grooves
and slick R&B styling Ashanti was all about. Hitting number one
worldwide, the chart success of “Foolish” was replicated by follow-up singles
“Happy” and “Baby,” both Top Five hits.
Later, the Long Island native would get the ultimate awards from
Billboard as Female Artist and Top New Pop Artist of 2002.At this point,
Ashanti’s fashion sense came to fore. Famed for favoring Burberry and Louis
Vuitton-types, she has been described as a young Mary J. Blige who
knows how to combine cutting-edge with class; gangsta meets
glamour, so to speak.
Among her famed outfits was the sexy sheer and shredded
chiffon-metallic trim Gucci gown she wore at the Grammy s. At the Video Music Awards,
she made jaws drop with a pink leather-ensemble held together by strips of
pink sequins with matching pink diamond drop earrings, a tiny pink
purse and pink ballerina heels.
But even in casual wear, Ashanti takes the cake. Outside couture, one
of her more talked-about was hip-hugging boot cut faded denim twinned with
a waisted jacket she wore during a Planet Hollywood function. When she
tries to be incognito, Ashanti prefers stylish suede low hat paired, perhaps,
with tiny street wear.
Ashanti’s elite style team (that she brings with her anywhere she goes)
is composed of Rosie Michel (wardrobe stylist), J.J. makeup artist J.J.
and Hadiiya Barbel (hairstylist). “I like to be classy, sexy, sassy, but
not trashy,” explains Ashanti demurely during a recent Oprah appearance.
On May 26, Ashanti brings her fashion and music to Manila via a
one-night engagement at Araneta Coliseum dubbed "Ashanti: Live In Manila"
bringing with her the full band and production entourage, complete with the
much-talked about pyrotechnics during her performances.
Presented by Tommy Hilfiger watches, No Curfew watch stores, MTV
Philippines and Multramin Multi Vitamins, Ashanti will be performing
hit songs culled from three best-selling albums ("Ashanti," 2003's "Chapter
II" and the recently released "Concrete Rose").
